Interest in history is ingrained in me. My mom wanted to be an archeologist and was interested in old cultural heritage all over the world. At the age of 16, I joined her on a trip to Egypt to visit her beloved temples and historic graves. My father read tons of books with historical topics and built period ship models like “Victory” and “Sovereign of the Seas” all throughout my childhood. So, the aesthetics and stories of the past have always caught my creative curiosity.
Art history was one of my hobbies as a young pupil. I had an enormous folder with tons of pictures of Roman, Greek and Egyptian art. And I had an amazing art teacher at school who trained us intensely. No wonder historical references snuck into my work pretty early on. So a combination of period themes and portraiture seems the logical thing to do, and I‘m pleased to say that the resonance is pretty wonderful so far.
My Process
I will get in touch with you about your beloved art pieces in history. And we will find a way to implement your portrait in them. Full figure or bust, whatever your heart longs for. Usually I do a collage of several pieces and show you the Photoshop draft. Then we will get to work.
If you decide to have your portrait painted, we will make a selection of photos beforehand. I have to have a look at the shots. Size, mood and sharpness first. The moment we agree, I will make a suggestion for the painting. Pretty often I do a draft in Photoshop to improve composition and design. The moment you agree on the draft I go in process mode and I will need about three months to finish your piece. I usually contact the client when I‘m 95% done. Then we can discuss final touches or small changes to be made. Working on watercolor does not allow that much change, so it’s important that we agree on the draft 100%. The moment you give a go the process is pretty much set.
When I‘m finished you will get a high res photo of the work. Then I will provide packaging and will take care of shipping. The moment your work arrives, please send me a note, so that I know the work did arrive safely and secure.
Bring history to life on the canvas
Usually my A4 watercolors are around 350 to 550 Euro, depending on the motiv. A portrait is usually A3 or larger, because of the details, I love to include. I sell these portraits usually between 2.000 and 3.500 Euro. Depends on the amount of details included. Alternative or larger sizes: price in consultation. Fees listed are for the artwork only and do not include shipping or travel expenses, framing or international tax.
